My Yoni Steaming Midlife Adventure
Yoni steaming intrigued me, I had seen the information on this ancient self-care practice and its benefits, including its ability to regulate periods and decrease cramping, but I wasn’t sure of the benefits for women who experience postmenopausal symptoms.
Yoni steams, also referred to as V-steams, vaginal steams, pelvic steams, chai-yok, or bajo's, are a part of a healing art that is becoming popular again. Even so, I was a little hesitant…even though I knew, no one sees your yoni! So I solicited a friend who had an interest as well and off we went together to check it out.
We had a nice quiet room and our steam facilitator gave us a short intake form, which indicted which herb blend was right for each us. She had us sit slowly, to settle in, on our little steamers; yup feeling ok.. but oh yes…after a brief sit…yup our yoni ‘s were a bit too hot, off we went. The importance of sitting comfortably was reiterated by our facilitator…letting the steam, settle she added some cool water. Finding the ‘just right’ comfort level, like Goldilocks who had found the perfect porridge, we relaxed with a nice tea while our facilitator guided us into a light meditation. The steam felt wonderful and warm, I could feel the vapors permeating and yeah… actually waking up my yoni!!! Afterwards I felt lighter, refreshed and more energetic.
The next day I was still feeling relaxed and balanced and WOW I had slept through the whole night, no serious night sweats. Over the course of the next day I tried doing some Kegel exercises and was BLOWN away at how more intense it felt.
Were these the first indicators that something was changing? I was so excited!!
I needed to know more about this practice of healing, and set out to investigate. In my research I found that pelvic steams are beneficial for men too, that the healing wasn’t just the physical, it can be at the emotional level as well. I knew if I had this knowledge when I was a young women, things for me would have been different…the testimonies on women’s successes was so moving, I felt compelled to offer this healing to others.
I am a Certified Steam Facilitator myself now and indulge in my self-care steam about every 10 days, which has added the benefits of: less of and less intense hot flashes, less dryness, less fatigue, less frequent urination, less pain, and increased energy…and saving the best for last, enhanced libido. Who-hoooo!!
Mostly though, I feel by creating this loving practice I have deepened my connection to my feminine essence…and I am definitely enjoying ‘letting off a little steam’!
